  • Fråga: Mystery Stromberg Vase

Hi, Have just registered here and appears to be a very informative site and knowledgable people.
I have just recently bought this beautiful vase which i know to be Stromberg but not sure about maker. It was sold as a design by Gunnar Nylund and cut/etched by Rune Strand. I've learnt that Nylund often designed George and the Dragon so feels like this is true and he was the designer but not sure of the etcher. Could it be Asta Stromberg?
The base markings are B655 C (or G) 480. After this there are letters. Could be CXY followed by AS possibly or RS?
Very heavy 12 inches in height or 300mm. 5.2kg weight. Thick glass.
The company PENTA probably ordered a Vase to be created by Stromberg to celebrate 25 years. The date has been cut/etched showing 1/1/55. The actual etching is deeply cut into the glass then etched after. Remarkable detail not easily shown in the photos.
Appeciate any information as to the codes on the base and letters at the end.
    Thanks

Hi! The this floral vase B 655 is a design by Gunnar Nylund, about 1954 -1955. The engraving pattern C 480 is also by Gunnar Nylund and from the same time about 1954-55. Rune Strand has nothing to do with this vase or engraving pattern. He did not work for Strombergshyttan in the 1950s (the Penta monogram is 1/6 1955 and the vase must be done short before that time). It stands "B655 C480 GN SH" (S in ligature with H). GN= Gunnar Nylund, SH= Strombergshyttan. The S in ligature with H is drawn to many of the glass drawings by Gunnar Nylund at Strombergshyttan from the 1950s, which have been preserved.

Additional information: Motif seems not to be etched (I don't know what you mean with first cut then etched?). Its seems to be engraved with the old engraving method using fixed copper wheel. Then it can sometimes look as if the enhanced surfaces are very smooth (as in etching). In the 1960 Rune Strand began using mobile dental drill instead. It became with this method more difficult to get the surfaces as smooth. On the other hand, it became easier to engrave deep.

        Mystery vase

Hi Nils, Thanks so much for your informed details on the vase. Would Gunnar also be the engraver? Or would this be someone else?
Do you also think this was a one-off design especially created for PENTA for their 25th anniversary?
        Thanks again
        Dave

Mart9911: Your vase made me think of my own favorit, which comes to use at this time every year. I have named it "my tulips vase". Mine is only 175 mm in height, but the glass is very thick and heavy. The rounded low part reminds me of yours. The decoration is an etched butterfly.

rebessin: Could it be that my vase also is designed by Gunnar Nylund?

Gunnar Nylund was a designer, not a engraver, which is a completely different skill. And i doubt that Nylund ever designed a floral motif with a butterfly. His designs are more powerful and has a modernistic style.

The engraver could be my uncle, Ragnar Bergqvist, educated at the engraver school in Orrefors and working for Lindefors/Strombergshyttan from 1928 - 1970s. Or Thord Abrahamsson who worked there as an engraver from about 1929/30 - 1960s. Or August Abrahamsson working for Strombergshyttan 1933 - 1960s as an engraver. There were also some others who I don't know the name of. But my tips is Ragnar Bergqvist, he mastered the older engraving technique with fixed grinding wheel to perfection.

Thanks Rebessin for your detailed knowledge. I looked up some of Ragmar's work-I agree with you, this could well be his engraving. Your Uncle was certainly a master at what he did. The details are so finely executed.
